Peterhead continue to chase league leading Pars

Peterhead are closing in on a place in the play-offs but manager Jim McInally insists there will be no easing up from his side.

The Blue Toon can secure their place in the Championship play-off today if they beat Airdrie and Albion Rovers fail to win at Brechin City.

McInally is delighted with the form of his players, who host the Diamonds at Balmoor today, but wants them to prolong the title race for as long as they can by trying to close the gap on leaders Dunfermline.

The Peterhead manager said: “We’re nearly there. Another three or four points will get us into the play-offs and that’s taking into account other teams would need to win their games.

“We’ve done fantastically but with three games this week it has been a tough spell for us. I know it is a long shot but we are trying to keep pressure on Dunfermline as our league is going to throw up some interesting games.”

The Pars are four wins away from clinching the League 1 title but McInally hopes the competitiveness of the division can give his side hope of catching Allan Johnston’s league leaders.

He said: “Look at the bottom, everyone is fighting for something and there will be a lot of hard games for every team between now and the end of the season. If we can keep exerting pressure then we can look up rather than down the way.

“Every game in this division requires players to roll up their sleeves and get stuck in. We haven’t been found wanting in that area as we are able to fight our cause but we need to make sure we concentrate. There are no easy games.”

Midfielder Jamie Stevenson will be rested after suffering a tight hamstring in last weekend’s win against Stenhousemuir.
