Scottish Open may return to Aberdeen

The European Tour has not ruled out the Scottish Open returning to Royal Aberdeen in the future.

Peter Adams, championship director of the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open, has been impressed by this year’s host course and says next month’s championship, which is taking place from July 10 to 13, may not be a one-off.

However, Adams was quick to stress it would be down to the members of Royal Aberdeen to decide upon whether the Scottish Open returns one day.

He said: “So far, so good. We’ve been made extremely welcome by the membership of Royal Aberdeen.

“However, it is a members’ club and we are here by their kind invitation. We would love to come back, I don’t know when that would be, but we would need to feel we were being invited by the club and I’m absolutely sure we’ll have those sorts of conversations at the conclusion of this year’s event.”

Rickie Fowler became the latest of golf’s big names to add the Scottish Open to his schedule yesterday and Adams says he is delighted with the field, which looks set to be the strongest at the Scottish Open for years.

He added: “We’ve always regarded the Scottish Open as one of the leading events on the European Tour. After the Majors and the World Golf Championships, with the BMW PGA Championship we’ve always regarded the Scottish Open as one of the top two events on the Tour.

“A lot has been said about the field for this year’s tournament. We’re delighted to be here at Royal Aberdeen.

“I would say it’s one of the best fields we’ve had for the Scottish Open and, possibly, with a few more names to add, it could be the best field.

“We’ve got 24 of the world’s top 60 at the moment. We have the Scottish Open and Open champion Phil Mickelson, the US Open champion Justin Rose and the new BMW PGA champion Rory McIlroy. In terms of Open winners, we have Phil Mickelson, Darren Clarke, Paul Lawrie, Sir Nick Faldo and Padraig Harrington. And we have a total of seven major champions in the field.

“There is a strong possibility we’ll be adding some more very high-calibre names. We’re extremely well set.”
