The calmer conditions are making good scoring possible for the early starters in today’s Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open second round at Royal Aberdeen.

Scotland’s Peter Whiteford has made the best of his 7am start by playing the opening eight holes in five under par, which included an eagle at the par five sixth.

Whiteford had started the day tied 138th after a first round of 76 but is now back to level par and tied 45th.

India’s Gaganjeet Bhullar, who signed for a 75 yesterday, has surged up the leaderboard after playing the opening 11 holes in four under par to move back to level par.

Current leader Rory McIlroy, who shot a course record 64 yesterday, tees off at 1.20pm this afternoon.

The projected cut is currently level par.

Meteorologist Mike McClellan expects better weather for spectators and players today.

He said: “At 6am the skies were clear, winds were light and temperatures were cool as high-pressure moved into the area.

“Plenty of sunshine is expected today as winds shift from the west-northwest early this morning to south-southeast this afternoon.

“The next weather system approaches Scotland on Saturday and Sunday in the form of a cold front bringing us a chance for showers as early as Saturday evening.”
