Marc Watt, from the same Inverallochy Golf Club, near Fraserburgh, that produced Walker Cup player Steven Young, followed in the latter’s footsteps yesterday by winning the Paul Lawrie Foundation Scottish schoolboys 36-hole golf championship over the Murrayshall Hotel course, near Perth.
Watt had rounds of 69 and 76 for a total of one-under-par 145 over the par-73 parkland layout.
He won by three shots from Carluke player Graeme Greer and Dunbar’s Connor Wilson.
Defending champion Darren Howie (Peebles) tied for sixth place on 150 with rounds of 75 and 73.
Watt shared the halfway lead on four-under 69 with Greg Dalziel (Airdrie).
In more difficult conditions with the wind rising, Dalziel was blown away to an 86 second time round but Watt held on to his advantage with an inward 35 in the afternoon for a 76.
Watt looked a class performer with one eagle 3, six birdies and four bogeys in his opening 69.
William McGirt won a play-off against fellow American Jon Curran to claim his first PGA Tour title at the Memorial event in Ohio.
With the duo tied on 15-under-par 273 after 72 holes, it took two more until a winner was decided and, when Curran bogeyed the 18th the second time round, McGirt wrapped up the victory with a 6ft putt for par.
Dustin Johnson finished third at 14 under, while Rory McIlroy, J.B. Holmes, Gary Woodland and Matt Kuchar tied for fourth a shot further back.
McIlroy, who carded a final-day round of 68, reverted to a conventional putting grip at Muirfield Village and appeared to have no issues on the greens. The 27-year-old used the cross-handed method when winning the Irish Open on his last appearance .
