Peterhead-born Jamie McLeary’s is hoping it is third time lucky at the Aberdeen Asset Management Scottish Open.

The 35-year-old had just finished taking part in a final qualifier for this month’s Open championship at Glasgow Gailes on Tuesday when he discovered he had secured a place in the field for Castle Stuart.

After missing out on one of three qualifying spot for Royal Troon, McLeary’s mood was improved when he was told that European Ryder Cup captain Darren Clarke had decided to pull out. There was a 10 year gap between his previous appearances with McLeary missing the cut at Loch Lomond in 2004 and Royal Aberdeen in 2014.

He said: “I did expect that I would get in the Scottish Open because I was one of the first reserves and people tend to pull out.

“However there was still a feeling of excitement when it was confirmed I would be in the field. It will be the third time I have played in the Scottish Open.

“I haven’t been playing well recently so I am hoping to turn that around very soon.

“Hopefully that will be next week at Castle Stuart.”
