Movember special: The top 10 moustaches in football

David Seaman proudly shows off his moustache.

For some of the country there is only one week to go until we can crack into our Advent calendars, for others there is just one week to go until the razors can come out and a month’s worth of top lip hair can be shaved off.

Once again men across the UK have come together to banish their razors, and grow a moustache for Movember, raising fortunes for great men’s health causes in the process.

The P&J fully supports the Movember fundraising movement, however, we also recognise this as a great opportunity to show off some of the best moustaches to have ever taken to a football pitch.

1. Willie Miller

Lets be honest, we were never going to start with anyone other than the man voted Aberdeen’s greatest player of all time, William Ferguson Miller.

Not only was Miller an outstanding defender, he was also a tremendous sporter of the moustache.

2. Graeme Souness

We need not look much further than the man who played just in front of Miller in the Scotland team, Graeme Souness.

Famed for his commanding midfield performances for Liverpool, many an opponent was scared of a Souness 50/50 challenge and just as many were afraid of his tache.

3. Ronald Spelbos

Soccer - World Cup Qualifier - Group Two - Ireland v Holland

Spending his entire career in Belgium and Holland it was Ronald Spelbos’ moustache that really helped him make his name.

His football talents were enough to get him a move to Ajax and over 20 caps for Holland, however, it his his moustache that will ensure the name Ronald Spelbos goes down in history.

4. Artur George

Before Cristiano Ronaldo arrived on the scene there was only one Portuguese that could really get people talking about his good looks – and that was Artur George and his moustache.

George played for Porto, Academica, Benfica and Belenenses before going on to manage more clubs than you or I have had hot dinners.

5. David Seaman

The tache. The strip. Oh how we love this picture of David Seaman.
The tache. The strip. Oh how we love this picture of David Seaman.

This picture truly is the gift that just keeps on giving. Not only did it proudly take its place in our worst ever football strips feature, it now makes it in here too.

David Seaman was a fine goalkeeper in his day but unfortunately for Dave he is most likely to be remembered for being lobbed by Ronaldinho from 40 yards, sporting a silly tache and growing a daft pony tail.

6. Brian Kilcline

Brian Kilcline is better know by his nickname – ‘Killer Kilcline’, therefore I will not be slagging off anything about him. Brian, I think your tache looks great, keep up the good work.

7. Vicent del Bosque

A football hero for his achievements both as a player and manager for Real Madrid and the Spanish national team.

A cult hero for his class and most importantly – his quite delightful moustache.

8. Charlie Paynter

Too many off our top tache candidates are guilty of taking their facial hair for granted – not Charlie Paynter.

West Ham boss Paynter took care of his hair to perfect a pointed moustache during his time at Upton Park in the 1930s.

9. Rudi Voller

Rudi Voller has been a long term rocker of the moustache.

Rudi Voller matched his extravagant blonde perm with a dark moustache and unlike those taking part in Movember, Voller stood by his facial hair throughout his entire career and that loyalty gets him a place in our list.

10. Michael Owen

As a player he was always a baby faced assassin, however, Owen has used Movember in previous years to shed that baby faced image while raising funds for a great cause.
