Ross County could make changes for Ayr encounter

Ross County manager Jim McIntyre has scope for changes when the Staggies take on League 1 side Ayr United in the second round of the League Cup tonight.

County have taken seven points from the first five Premiership games, recording an impressive 4-0 win against Kilmarnock on Saturday.

The manager shuffled his squad for that match by handing starts to defender Jamie Reckord, as well as midfielders Rocco Quinn and Jonathan Franks, who marked his debut with the Dingwall side’s second goal.

McIntyre reckons he has the strength in depth to make alterations for tonight’s visit of the Honest Men and said: “It’s up to me to utilise the squad when we think it is time for changes to be made.

“I was pleased for Rocco, Jamie and Jonathan – they did really well coming into the team and put their mark on the game.

“It’s the start of the season and fitness levels are very good. We’ll pick the team we think can win the match.

“Whether we make changes or not, it isn’t going to be what I’d call wholesale, or a first team and a second team.

“We don’t have that here. We have good players, which was highlighted on Saturday with the three changes we made.”

Ayr have made a decent start to their season, and defeated Stranraer 2-1 on Saturday to move fourth in League 1.

United are managed by Ian McCall, who McIntyre played under at Dundee United, and he is determined his former manager does not inflict a cup upset on the Highlanders.

McIntyre added: “We’re the favourites to go through as the Premiership side. We’ve been involved in cup competitions before and know there are surprise results in every round.

“We’ve got to make sure we’re not one of them. We’re facing a side who have been in decent form and have started the season relatively well.

“We know it is going to be tough. I know Ian very well as one of my previous managers and I also know several of the players really well.

“They have good players and good experience in their side. We have to make sure we do what we do well and impose ourselves on the game.

“Ian is a professional man and knows the game. He’s been in the game a long time.

“He will be coming up with a system he thinks can win the game.”
