Ross County loan move is the end of David Goodwillie’s Aberdeen career

David Goodwillie has joined Ross County on a six-month loan deal.
David Goodwillie has joined Ross County on a six-month loan deal.

Aberdeen forward David Goodwillie will not return to Pittodrie in the summer following his transfer deadline day loan move to Ross County.

Goodwillie has signed for the Staggies until the end of the season after struggling to earn a regular start since joining the Dons in 2014.

The former Dundee United and Blackburn Rovers attacker has made 63 appearances during his 18 months with Aberdeen, scoring eight goals, but has largely been manager Derek McInnes’ second choice behind leading scorer Adam Rooney.

The 26-year-old is out of contract at Pittodrie in the summer and, while there is no future for him with the Dons, Goodwillie is determined to find his best form again with the Staggies.

He said: “I’m not sure where I will go in the summer. Derek McInnes wished me well. He gave me a chance at Aberdeen and it hasn’t worked out.

“He’s just said go out and do well and show everybody how good I can be.

“I made loads of friends and enjoyed a special time at Aberdeen. I enjoyed every moment.”

McInnes hopes Goodwillie can revive his career in the Highlands under Jim McIntyre and added: “I think he can kick on his career. Jim knows him. Both of us played with David at Dundee United and know the player he is capable of being.”
