Salon aims for ‘green’ crown

Salon aims for ‘green’ crown

People from across the north-east are being encouraged to support an eco-friendly hair salon’s bid to be crowned one of Scotland’s leading environmental businesses.

Inverurie-based Elan Hair Design has been shortlisted for the environment honour as part of the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards 2013, organised by the prestigious family-owned distillery based in Dufftown.

Elan, which can lay claim to being the UK’s most eco-friendly hair salon, completed an innovative refurbishment project following feedback which indicated its customers wanted a greener and more sustainable service.

A shortlist of nominees has already been drawn up by an expert panel of judges but the Scottish public will decide on the final award winners.

People can vote for Elan Hair Design online at www.glenfiddich.com/spiritofscotland until Thursday, November 7. They will then be automatically entered into a prize draw to win a luxury break for two which includes a stay at the Meldrum House Hotel and a VIP tour of the Glenfiddich Distillery.

The winners of the Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards will be announced at a glittering awards ceremony which takes place on Thursday, November 28, at Prestonfield House in Edinburgh.

Lorna Milton, owner and director of Elan, said: “To have been nominated for such a prestigious award is a great feat for a small business from Inverurie. We know we’re up against some tough competition but are hopeful of doing well.

“I’m sure we’ll receive tremendous backing from the local community who have already got firmly behind our eco-friendly project.”

The Glenfiddich Spirit of Scotland Awards 2013, now in its 16th year, are regarded as among the country’s top accolades. The awards recognise those who are excelling in their field and pioneering new developments across Scottish cultural life. Previous winners include Sir Alex Ferguson, Sir Chris Hoy, Ewan McGregor and Susan Boyle.

Elan is in the running for two prestigious British business awards. It is a finalist for the Sustainable Business Award at the National Business Awards on Tuesday, November 12, as well as the sustainability honour in the British Chamber Awards, which take place on Thursday, November 28.

The eco-friendly salon has previously clinched 11 award wins from a total of 37 nominations. It was also a finalist for the green award at the Northern Star Business Awards 2013.

Gordon and Lorna Milton run Elan Hair Design with their daughters Lanice and Lauren. The business, which currently has a team of 15, was established more than 40 years ago.
