The Ryder Cup is currently finely poised at Gleneagles with America holding a narrow lead following the conclusion of this morning’s fourballs.
In the final match of this morning, America’s Phil Mickelson broke European hearts on the 18th hole with a birdie to defeat Europe’s top duo of world number one Rory McIlroy and number three Sergio Garcia. That birdie secured victory for the Americans and gave them an overall lead of 2.5-1.5.
Europe had claimed the first point of the competition thanks to Justin Rose and Henrik Stenson, however, that lead did not last long as young American duo Jordan Spieth and Patrick Reed defeated Stephen Gallacher and Ian Poulter to draw the scores level.
Rose and Stenson were in impressive form and secured a comfortable 5&4 victory against Bubba Watson and Webb Simpson, who were far from their best.
Shortly after the Europeans went one ahead, Spieth and Reed collected America’s first point, beating Gallacher and Poulter 5&4.
The third match to be concluded was then halved as Jimmy Walker rescued the tie for the Americans before Mickelson’s final hole birdie gave Tom Watson’s USA team the lead.
