Forres Mechanics: Wind wins it for Mighty Cans

Forres Mechanics
Forres Mechanics

In a season full of firsts for me, this past Saturday was another to add to that list, after making my maiden visits to Brora and Fraserburgh earlier in the season, I have now visited Christie Park, Huntly for the first time, to see if Forres could keep up their winning ways against a Huntly side still living in the shadow of their past glories.

On what was a lovely dry sunny day, albeit very windy, Forres came back from losing the first goal in the first half to score twice in the second half and take the three points back to Mosset Park.

The afore mentioned strong wind virtually being a 12th man for both teams when playing with the wind behind them.

Huntly appeared to play a lot better than their current league position with that wind and took a deserved lead when the Forres defence seemed to fall asleep, leaving John Urquhart unmarked in acres of space to shoot past a helpless Stuart Knight, however they couldn’t capitalise on that and went in at half time only leading 1-0.

With the wind now behind Forres in the second half it seemed only a matter of time before we would get back on level terms and then go on to win the game, although Huntly were still dangerous on the break and they should have gone 2-0 up when a shot went beyond Knight but rolled just past his left hand post.

We got the leveller with the aid of a huge stroke of luck, Simon Allan cut in from the right and sent in a low cross which missed everybody but with that 12th man (the trusty wind) it curled its way in off the far post, much deserved after several missed chances.

Stuart Soane, who had come on as a sub at the start of the second half, proved to be the hero, as after yet another attack his shot from just outside the box took a wicked deflection and with the help of that wind looped up and over their goalkeeper to give us the lead and ultimately the win I think our play deserved.

Well done boys!
