Keith FC: Maroons smash long standing records with derby rout

Keith FC
Keith FC

Phew, if Keith play like the way did on Saturday after a five week enforced break, they are definitely heading in the right direction.

The Maroons completely destroyed neighbours Huntly, hitting them for six with a second half flurry of goals that left them gasping.

That made it three successive league wins on the trot for the first time in three years, and the first three successive away league wins in nearly five years.

Keith fans headed the 10 miles back along the A96 with grins as wide the River Isla, and although it was essentially a team performance, leading the way in superb style was newly appointed skipper Michael Ewen with a deadly hat-trick.

Okay, we are not getting carried away, we are still in 10th spot, but are breathing down the necks of several sides directly above us in the table.

Manager Allan Hale and his management team have made a big impression, and there is a different feel about the squad of players just now.

We are not going to compete with the big spending outfits on the financial front, but a handy squad of players is rapidly taking shape, with no little enthusiasm, vim and vigour and skill increasingly evident.

The standard in the Highland league is still pretty good, and the passing skills and speed of thought and awareness was a standout in the Maroon ranks at Christie Park.

Oh, just as a matter of interest, I had a leaf through my dusty record books, and was impressed to find that it was as long ago as December 1968 that they scored as many goals on their neighbours’ stamping ground when they won 7-0 on 21 December 1968.
