The Press and Journal is teaming up with The Great Run company to bring the World’s Favourite Run to Aberdeen. Sign up today and choose from a scenic 10k run around the city or a more challenging 13.1-mile half marathon, there is also an opportunity to get the kids involved with the fun Family Mile.

Whether you’re new to running, want to complete a personal challenge or you’re a club runner aiming for a record PB there will be something for all ages and abilities in this city-wide celebration of running. So what are you waiting for?

The Course

Starting and finishing on Union Street the 10k will take runners east, past the Town Hall and County House and towards the famous Castle Gate before turning right down Marischal Street towards Aberdeen Harbour. At the 3k point near the Beach Ballroom, runners will then head west and will join the half marathon route later as the course loops round Pittodrie Football Stadium.

Now into the second-half of the course, runners will follow Park Road and cross West North Street before eventually making their way past some of Aberdeen’s most iconic buildings and finishing back on Union Street, where they will be handed their goodie-filled finisher’s pack and medal.

Have a bit of fun with the Family Mile

The Great Aberdeen Run isn’t just for adults, so bring the whole family along and get the kids racing against mum, dad, grannie or grandpa. It’s all about getting children active and interested in sport so sign them up for the Family Mile so they too can get that finish line feeling.

The Family Mile is open to children aged 3-15 years old. Participants aged 3-8 will get a place for an accompanying adult, whereas 9-15 will have their own dedicated wave at the start to allow them to run as fast as they like!

After the event all children will be presented with a special medal, bottle of water and a snack to celebrate their achievement! Places are limited so sign up early to avoid disappointment.

A short history of The Great Run

Chairman and former Olympic Champion Brendan Foster set up the Great Run Company in 1981 and the first event, The Great North Run, is now the world’s greatest half marathon and the UK’s biggest running event with over 57,000 runners and hold the Guinness World Record title for the largest half marathon.

Over 3 million participants had taken part in Great Run events since the first run in 1981 and the portfolio now include over 40 individual events delivered annually through running and swimming.  These events have over 300,000 participants, 670,000 spectators, 25 hours of live television programmes, over 6.5 million viewers and some of the world’s best athletes performing in all the major events.
