British Oscar hopefuls recognised on and off camera

British talent in front of and behind the camera has been recognised with Oscar nominations.

Olivia Colman, Christian Bale, Richard E Grant and Rachel Weisz lead hopes in the acting category, with Welsh-born Bale tipped to win the best actor category for his role as former US vice president Dick Cheney in Vice.

Colman is nominated for her role as Queen Anne in the black period comedy The Favourite, which also landed Weisz a supporting nod, while Grant is nominated for the Lee Israel biopic Can You Ever Forgive Me?

Behind the camera there was a double nomination for costume designer Sandy Powell, who was nominated for The Favourite and Mary Poppins Returns.

She will compete against fellow British costume designer Alexandra Byrne, who picked up a nod for her work on Mary Queen Of Scots.

There was also success for British writer Deborah Davis, who penned The Favourite’s script with Tony McNamara, and producer and DJ Mark Ronson, who wrote song Shallow with Lady Gaga, Andrew Wyatt and Anthony Rossomando.

The track from A Star Is Born is nominated in the best original song category.

The Oscars will be announced at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles on February 24.
