Bafta formally terminates Harvey Weinstein’s membership

Bafta has officially terminated Harvey Weinstein’s membership after a slew of sexual harassment and assault allegations.

The British film and television academy suspended the disgraced movie mogul’s membership last year.

A statement from the academy said: “Following the suspension of Harvey Weinstein’s Bafta membership in October 2017, Bafta has formally terminated his membership, effective immediately.

“The termination is the result of a process laid out in Bafta’s constitution.”

His membership was terminated last year “in light of recent very serious allegations”, Bafta said at the time.

A statement added: “Whilst Bafta has previously been a beneficiary of Mr Weinstein’s support for its charitable work, it considers the reported alleged behaviour completely unacceptable and incompatible with Bafta’s values.

“We hope this announcement sends a clear message that such behaviour has absolutely no place in our industry.”

Bafta was one of the first organisations to suspend Weinstein over the allegations against him. The British Film Institute also revoked his BFI fellowship.

The Academy of Motion Picture Arts and Sciences, which votes for the Oscars, also voted to strip Weinstein of his lifetime membership.

Police in the UK are investigating a number of sexual assault allegations against the former Hollywood heavyweight.

Bafta will hold its annual film awards on February 18 where stars are expected to wear black in honour of the Time’s Up movement for gender equality and in solidarity with the victims of sexual harassment and assault.
