A special pre-release screening of Toy Story 4 has been announced by the Edinburgh International Film Festival (EIFF).

The next instalment of the Disney Pixar series of animated films will be shown in the city’s Festival Theatre on Sunday June 16 – five days ahead of the movie being released in UK cinemas and three days before the festival officially opens.

The new film appears to mirror the storyline of the first, where Woody, voiced by Tom Hanks, must contend with the arrival of a troublesome new toy.

The movie, produced by Pixar Animation Studios for Walt Disney Pictures, marks the return of many of the first two films’ characters, including Mr Potato Head, Jessie, Rex, Hamm and Slinky Dog.

Toy Story 4 comes nine years after Toy Story 3, which ended with the toys’ original owner Andy going off to college, donating his toys to toddler Bonnie.

The EIFF said it is delighted to be starting the festival celebrations early with the screening.

EIFF artistic director Mark Adams said: “We love and value our long-standing relationship with Disney and Pixar, so it is a real thrill that we can show this animated delight to film fans just before the festival starts. The arrival of a new Toy Story film really is something to celebrate.”

Toy Story 4 will be released in cinemas on June 21.
