Benedict Cumberbatch leaps for joy in a new Brexit TV drama, as his alter-ego unveils the infamous bus with the claim that Britain will save £350 million a week by leaving the EU.

Cumberbatch plays Dominic Cummings, the mastermind behind Vote Leave, in Monday’s Channel 4 show, Brexit: The Uncivil War.

Vote Leave’s bus was adorned with the message “We send the EU £350 million a week, let’s fund our NHS instead”.  The figure has since been discredited.

In a teaser clip from the drama, a balding, gilet-wearing Cummings unveils the bus to high-profile political supporters Michael Gove and Boris Johnson.

As the bus parks up in an empty car park, Cumberbatch’s excited character tells the pair: “Wait for this – ta-da.”

Gove and Johnson (played by Oliver Maltman and Richard Goulding respectively) express surprise at the use of the NHS logo, asking: “Are we allowed?”

Cummings replies: “Imagine their faces,” and giggles: “If (then health secretary) Jeremy Hunt wants to come down here and try and peel the label off himself he’s more than welcome. We’ll have the cameras ready.”

He thumps the bus with his hands while jumping up and down and exclaims: “Let’s take back control.”

Vote Leave was the officially designated Brexit-supporting campaign during the 2016 EU referendum.

Brexit: The Uncivil War airs on Channel 4 tonight at 9pm.
