The Queen reckons with her legacy in the first full trailer for the new series of The Crown, starring Olivia Colman as the monarch.

The third series of the big-budget Netflix drama will see the Oscar-winning actress take over from Claire Foy as the action moves into the turbulent new world of the 1960s and 70s.

Colman was first unveiled as the Queen in a teaser last month, which saw her appraising her image on a new stamp, alongside Foy’s on an old one.

In the new footage she is preparing for her silver jubilee and considering the impact she has had during her reign, saying in voiceover: “On days like today, ask yourself in the time I’ve been on the throne what have I actually achieved?

“This country was still great when I came to the throne, all that has happened on my watch is the place has fallen apart.”

The new episodes will be set against the backdrop of the miner’s strikes, the country’s bankruptcy and national security threats, as well as the tenure of Harold Wilson as prime minister.

It will feature Josh O’Connor as Prince Charles as he becomes Prince of Wales, who is advised: “Never turn your back on true love and watch out for your family.”

When he replies, “They mean well,” he is told, “No, they don’t.”

There will be further discord between Charles and his family when the heir to the throne questions: “Am I listened to in this family? Am I seen for who and what I am? No.”

However, the Queen can be heard saying: “We have all made sacrifices and suppressed who we are, it is not a choice, it is a duty.”

The trailer also shows Helena Bonham Carter as Princess Margaret, taking over from Vanessa Kirby, including a shot of her in the bath wearing a crown, and offers glimpses of Ben Daniels as Lord Snowdon, Jason Watkins as Wilson and Charles Dance as Lord Mountbatten, as well as a fleeting shot of Call The Midwife actress and Killing Eve writer Emerald Fennell as Camilla Parker-Bowles.

The new series of The Crown launches on Netflix on November 17.
