VIDEO: Death probe launched after woman found on fire in Moray town

A death probe has been launched after a woman was found on fire in a Moray town.

An area of Land Street, in the Buckpool area of Buckie, remains cordoned off this morning as officers continue their investigation.

A 63-year-old woman is understood to have been found with serious burns at around 7.30pm last night before being taken to hospital for treatment.

However, a spokeswoman for Police Scotland confirmed this morning the woman later died as a result of her injures.

The spokeswoman added: “Officers were called to the property at around 7.30pm last night.

“A woman, aged 63, was transported to Dr Gray’s hospital in Elgin by ambulance where she later died.

“Police remain in the area this morning while we carry out an investigation into the circumstances.”

Inquiries remain at an early stage but the death is currently being treated as unexplained.

George Sutherland, 63, told local media how he found the woman seriously injured and called for help.

“I went over to look and that is when I saw a body. At the time I didn’t know if it was a man or a woman,” he said.

“I ran back and shouted on my neighbour and said that someone was on fire by the sea.

“I phoned to get an ambulance and my wife and neighbour were using buckets of water to douse her. The top part of her clothes had completely burned or melted away.”

Police are appealing for witnesses to come forward as they begin to piece together the woman’s movements prior to the incident.

Anyone with information is asked to contact police on 101.
