Fans overjoyed as Arctic Monkeys mark return with gig announcement

Arctic Monkeys have released details of their first live gig of the year, sending their fans into a tailspin of excitement over their long-awaited return.

The Sheffield rockers, who went on hiatus in 2014, revealed on Twitter that they will headline the Firefly Festival this summer in the US.

They will take to the stage alongside fellow headline acts Eminem, The Killers and Kendrick Lamar at the music event, which runs from June 14-17 in Delaware.

The band, fronted by Alex Turner, announced their hiatus after the release of their successful 2013 album AM and its accompanying tour, which ran until November 2014.

Bassist Nick O’Malley recently hinted that the I Bet You Look Good On The Dancefloor rockers had reunited to work on a new album, which is expected to be released later this year.

He told motorcycle magazine The Ride that they had met up in September at a “secret location” and had already started recording.

He added that he hoped a new album would be out in 2018, and that “if it isn’t, we’ve got problems”.

Fans of the indie group took to Twitter to share their excitement at the band’s imminent comeback.

One fan said: “Arctic Monkeys announcing their live return has just made 2018.”

Joking about their few years out of the spotlight, one fan wrote: “New arctic monkeys updates after 50 years of silence.”

Another, sharing a meme that joked they had been away for “84 years”, added: “ARCTIC MONKEYS ARE BACK THIS IS NOT A DRILL!!!!”

One fan asked the band to treat their fans to some new music, writing: “Arctic Monkeys seem to be back. I’m in. Now come on and drop a glorious single.”

“Leaving work to the news that Arctic Monkeys are back has honestly made my week,” one fan declared.

Arctic Monkeys have won seven Brit Awards and a Mercury Prize for their debut album Whatever People Say I Am, That’s What I’m Not in 2006 among many other top accolades.

Their first five albums have all hit the top of the UK charts.
