The owner of a popular Torry takeaway has expressed his sadness after a fire broke out at his premises causing significant damage.

Fire crews descended on King Kebab on Victoria Road in Torry at just after 6am on Saturday following reports of a fire.

It is understood the fire originated on the ground floor shop premises, with the Scottish Fire and Rescue service deploying four appliances to the scene.

Fire crews managed to bring the fire under control before eventually extinguishing it and departing just before 8am.

Police confirmed no one was injured and an investigation had been launched into what happened.

A police spokesperson said: “Around 6.30am on Saturday, May 4, we were called to a report of a fire at a premises on Victoria Road, Aberdeen.

“Emergency services attended and the fire was extinguished by Scottish Fire and Rescue Service.

“There are no reported injuries. Inquiries are ongoing.”

King Kebab owner ‘very disappointed’

The owner of King Kebab, Mustafa Egilmez, speaking to The P&J said he was “very disappointed” when he heard about the fire.

Having lived in Aberdeen for six years and operated the takeaway for four, he just wants to provide a good life for his 18-month-old son.

He has yet to be allowed into the premises to assess the damage but knows it is mostly towards the back with smoke damage at the front of the shop.

Images show the place gutted at the back due to the fire with damaged to several pieces of equipment.

He says  the kitchen and backroom suffered “very bad damage” and unfortunately Mr Egilmez has limited funds to help rebuild the King Kebab causing him a lot of stress.

A GoFundMe has been launched asking for people to help Mr Egilmez with rebuilding the King Kebab, with a goal of £25,000.

He said: “I am very sad, I don’t have any money to run the business. I have tried to make a nice steady life here in Aberdeen.

“Everybody knows me in the Torry community, I feel that sense of community having been here for four years.”

Since opening, King Kebab has become a popular takeaway with Mr Egilmez noting they had built a loyal customer base in the area, which he was grateful for.

Mr Egilmez says that the damage could be thousands of pounds and is hoping he can raise money through generous donations through GoFundMe.
