Scotland has been captured in all its glory for a national photography competition – with the winning entries including a dramatic shot of towering waves crashing against Aberdeen lighthouse.

The Scottish Landscape Photographer of the Year victors were announced this week, after organisers examined thousands of entries submitted from all over the world.

Aberdeen photographer Willem Vlotman won in the Best Seascape category for his snap of stormy weather at the city harbour.

Fife-based photographer Stuart Low devised the contest as a way to celebrate Scotland’s many wonders.

Mr Low said it had been a truly amazing experience.

“At times it’s been nothing short of exhausting but to actually see it through has been one of the best experiences I could have hoped for,” he said.

“We had entries from across the globe.

“It has shown me that Scotland really is a world class destination for photography and I’m positive that when people see the book of winning images, it will inspire other photographers to come here and capture our amazing views.”

The overall winner was Kirkintilloch man Craig Aitchison, who submitted a portfolio including pictures of a snow scene among the Munro peaks, Loch Etive in Argyll and a rainbow over Loch Tulla, near Bridge of Orchy and Glen Coe.

Mr Aitchison said: “My number one photographic inspiration has always been Scotland’s unique landscape.

“To a photographer it has the perfect ingredients that can, at times, produce real moments of magic and it is these singular moments that I strive to capture on film to the very best of my ability.

“Winning this award is a dream come true.”

All of the photographs submitted were taken last autumn.

Carlisle photographer Brian Kerr won the Best Landscape award for his stunning shot of Threave Castle in Dumfries and Galloway.

Donald Cameron, from Perth, captured a striking shot of the Falkirk Wheel which collected the Best Urban award.

The overall winner, category winners and those commended will have their work showcased in an upcoming exhibition, book and postcards.
