Henry McPherson was the driver of a grey Vauxhall Corsa which was involved in a collision with a blue Ford Focus C-Max on the A952.
Sixty-one-year-old Mr MacPherson – who was better known as Harry – and his female passenger were both trapped in the vehicle which came to rest on its side on a grass embankment.
He died at the scene and the woman was cut free from the wreckage of the Vauxhall by firefighters.
The driver of the Ford, who was travelling alone, suffered leg injuries and was also freed from her car by firefighters.
Both women were taken to Aberdeen Royal Infirmary with serious injuries.
The accident happened on the Toll of Birness to Mintlaw stretch of the A952 at a series of bends near Clola.
It is understood the Ford Focus was travell8ing south and Mr MacPherson was heading north when the crash happened.
It is understood he stayed in the St Fergus area.
Peterhead North and Rattray councillor Alan Gardiner, who lives nearby, said: “I didn’t know him personally but as a member of the local community it’s shocking to hear.
“My personal condolences go out to his family. I think I can speak on behalf of my fellow ward councillors when I say our sympathies go out to all those involved.”
Central Buchan councillor Lenny Pirie added: “I can only send my condolences to all the families concerned.
“I passed the spot earlier today and it’s very sad to think that something so tragic happened there.”
A police spokeswoman said yesterday: “The collision happened at around 10.20pm on Friday, October 3 and involved a grey Vauxhall Corsa and a blue Ford Focus C-Max.”
Police, paramedics and firefighters from Maud and Peterhead went to the scene.
A fire brigade spokesman said: “Firefighters used a variety of equipment including hydraulic cutting gear, chocks and blocks, stabilisers, lighting and a reciprocating saw to free three casualties.
“Two people were seriously injured and one person sadly died.”
Police officers closed the road for 10 hours as investigators tried to piece-together what happened in the moments before the crash.
