A former Aboyne Academy pupil with the ambition of working in the film industry has won a prestigious national competition.

Emily Cruickshank, 23, emerged victorious in the event, hosted by Channel 4, giving her the chance to tour their studios for a day and talk with current employees.

Miss Cruickshank, who currently studies at Glasgow Clyde College, triumphed in the competition, which required entrants to produce a short film based on the theme of equality.

This was in the build-up to the Rio Paralympic Games this summer, with Channel 4 being the official UK broadcaster of the global event.

Miss Cruickshank said yesterday: “I gained a lot of self-belief from the competition.

“I felt, at the start, that perhaps I was not as experienced or creative as the rest of my team, but I played the role of director and we did really well.”

For the film, her team chose to incorporate the Paralympics by using a baton from a relay race as a microphone to discuss and debate a range of different people’s views on equality.

Miss Cruickshank now hopes that her success in such a competitive environment will help her pursue her dreams of working behind the camera in the future.

She is set to graduate with an NQ Television with Photography qualification this summer.

Whereupon, she is hoping to advance into the college’s two-year HND Creative Industries: Television course.

Jim McIvor, senior lecturer at Glasgow Clyde College, said: “Emily is a bright, enthusiastic student who will do well in the creative industries.

“She has shown during her short time here that she has the talent and skills required to succeed in the industry.

“We are so proud that she managed to win the competition as the director of her team.”
