Police in the Highlands and Islands are warning people not to drink and drive after a 31 motorists were caught over the limit in January.
A high profile national campaign was held targeting drink and drug drivers during the festive season – and officers have continued to stop drivers suspected to be over the limit throughout January.
Road Policing Inspector Neil Lumsden said: “It is very disappointing that we have arrested 31 drivers for driving while under the influence of alcohol during the month of January.
“The safety of all road users in the Highlands and Islands is a priority for us and we will not tolerate drivers taking the law into their own hands in this way.
“Time and again we warn that we will take action against drink drivers yet a small but significant minority of drivers continue to think they can ignore these messages.
Lumsden added: “Following the festive drink drive campaign I said that we would continue to target drink drivers and that activity will continue 365 days of the year.
“In highlighting this figure today I hope to send out a strong message to those tempted to drive whilst under the influence of alcohol.
“If you choose to drink and drive you are putting lives at risk as well as your livelihood.”
Anyone with concerns about a suspected drink or drug driver is urged to contact 101 or 999 if it is an emergency.
