Inverness schoolchildren “safe and well” after Westminster visit

A group of Inverness schoolchildren were “all safe and well” last night after receiving a guided tour of the Houses of Parliament just a day before the terror attack.

The 14 youngsters from Kinmylies Primary School and three adults had been on a two day visit to London for the WE Day youth event at Wembley Arena.

After arriving on Tuesday they were given a tour of the Palace of Westminster by local MP Drew Hendry and his colleague, Western Isles representative Angus MacNeil.

Yesterday afternoon, the school used social media to reassure parents that they had not been caught up in the incident at parliament and were safely on their way to Gatwick Airport to travel back up north.

“Fab time at WE day. On route to Gatwick. All safe and well,” the statement said.

It later added: “Flight on time at present. We cannot reply to individual texts. Please keep an eye on Twitter for updates. Looking forward to getting home.”

Mr Hendry also moved to reassure parents that the school party was safe, saying on social media: “For anyone concerned about the Kinmylies Primary school trip. They are at the airport.”

The school responded: “Thanks Drew. Thinking of you guys. Hope all is calm.”

Highland Council also confirmed that the visit to Westminster was on Tuesday and there were no plans to return there yesterday.

School trips to the parliament are regularly arranged with local representatives, and many youngsters were believed to be inside the estate at the time of yesterday’s incident.

Highland MP Ian Blackford said last night he was not aware of any other visits from north schools to Westminster yesterday.
