Iconic buildings throughout the Highlands and islands will be plunged into darkness at 10pm tonight in memory of the start of World War I.
The simultaneous switch-off, called Lights Out, is happening at venues nationwide to mark the centenary of the war’s outbreak, and will be followed by a series of commemorative events.
War memorials at Thurso, Brora, Dornoch, Invergordon, will have their lights put out, as will Halkirk’s, where the Ross Institute’s floodlights will also be switched off.
In Inverness, the cathedral, castle, war memorial at Cavell Gardens, and town house, will participate in the national event, as will Ruthven Barracks near Kingussie.
Earlier in the day, at 2pm, there will be a service at Inverness Old High Church, during which a memorial candle will be lit in memory of all those who lost their lives in the conflict.
It will then be taken in procession to St Andrew’s Cathedral, where a further commemoration will take place at 3.30pm, before the candle is placed at the cathedral’s war memorial.
As well as representatives of many organisations, two horses with riders in period dress will be at the rear of the procession, in recognition of the contribution and sacrifice horses made to the war effort.
Comhairle nan Eilean Siar is also marking the event by switching off lights at various buildings, with a single light being placed in a prominent place as a mark of reflection.
Among the venues joining Lights Out are council offices at Stornoway, Tarbert, Balivanich, and Castlebay, as well as schools, residential homes, and leisure centres.
