VIDEO: How many of these children’s movie themes do you recognise?

Elgin Town Hall was transformed into a land of pure imagination yesterday when a music group marked its 25th anniversary in colourful fashion.

Members of Moray Concert Brass dressed as famous fictional characters for the performance, with conductor Glenn Munro leading the way as Willy Wonka.

And the youngsters who went along to the special children’s concert were encouraged to follow suit by transforming themselves into their favourite big screen heroes and heroines.

The crew of miniature princesses, and one small Buzz Lightyear impersonator, danced and played with balloons at the foot of the stage, while the hall was filled with catchy tunes.

The stage itself resembled Mr Wonka’s chocolate factory, as it was festooned with oversized sweets created for the show by parents with links to the band.

The concert began with When You Wish Upon a Star, from Disney movie Pinocchio.

There followed a brassy performance of the Ghostbusters theme, a rousing recital of Colours of the Wind from Pocahontas and some hits from The Lion King.

There were delighted gasps when the Toy Story logo flashed onto the projector screens and the band broke into You’ve Got a Friend in Me.

Four tuba players offered a gentle version of Pure Imagination, from the 1971 Willy Wonka and the Chocolate Factory movie.

The spectacle came to a close with confetti falling from the ceiling during a performance of Let it Go from Frozen, but the band later gave an encore performance featuring themes from The Flintstones and Pirates of the Caribbean.

Yesterday afternoon’s show was part of a trio of events designed to celebrate Moray Concert Brass’s quarter century.

There was an anniversary gala concert on Saturday night, and the festivities were capped off with a swinging ceilidh last night.

Former member Martin Thomson travelled home from London for the occasion.

The 20-year-old, who is from Elgin, is studying jazz at the Trinity Laban Conservatoire of Music and Dance and attributes his passion to his time with the band as a youngster.

Mr Thomson said: “About 20 former members have come back for this, I wouldn’t have missed it for anything.

“I was in Moray Concert Brass for nine years, it is a big part of my life.”
