An injured hillwalker lit a fire on a mountain to guide a helicopter to his rescue.
The man was with another walker on 3881ft high Carn Eighe – which is north of the Great Glen, and forms the culminating point of the great range of peaks on the north side of Glen Affric.
The man’s fellow hiker left his companion, who had injured his ankle, to raise the alarm just before 9.45pm on Thursday.
The Coastguard Search and Rescue Helicopter based at Stornoway was sent.
“The man in his 50’s had managed to light a fire and this was spotted by the helicopter from about 1000ft,” said a spokeswoman for the Maritime and Coastguard Agency.
“The helicopter landed and the man was brought on board and taken to a safe location and passed into the care of the police.”
