Buckie couple celebrate 73rd wedding anniversary

Joe and Helen Smith of Buckie celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary.
Joe and Helen Smith of Buckie celebrate their 73rd wedding anniversary.

A Buckie couple, who were married during World War II are celebrating their 73rd wedding anniversary today.

Helen Smith, 93, and her family had to save clothing ration coupons for the dress she wore to marry the love of her life, Joe, 97, in 1943.

The couple met while Helen was stationed at Crail with the Navy Wrens and Joe was working as a fisherman out of Buckie.

Staying together for over seven decades has become as natural as breathing and sleeping to the devoted pair.

Mr Smith said: “Weddings happened much quicker when we met, especially during the war, but being with Helen so long has been amazing. She is such a wonderful woman.

“I suppose the secret to being so happy for so long is that when Helen talks, I listen.”

The couple were married at Elim Church in Aberdeen and now live at Burnside Court in Buckpool. During their marriage. they have had one daughter and now have two grandchildren.

After reaching another landmark, the couple are expecting a telegram from the Queen.

Mrs Smith said: “We have been so happy together for all these years.

“Of course, there have been some hard times, but we have always been there for each other and here we are all these years later.

“We already have three cards from Buckingham Palace, for 25, 40 and 50 years of marriage but I think for reaching 73, we might deserve another.

“It’s Joe’s 100th birthday in a few years so maybe Her Majesty will be able to drop us a line again then.”

A special cake has been made for Joe and Helen to share with the rest of the residents at Burnside Court to mark the special day.

Despite reaching a landmark which most brides and grooms can only dream about on their wedding day, the couple want to keep the event low-key.

Marie Buchan, Sheltered Housing Manager at Burnside Court, said: “Helen and Joe are a fantastic couple and so much fun to have around.

“I am glad we have been able to help them celebrate their special anniversary and look forward to many more in the years ahead.”
