This week’s Aberdonian has taken a look back at the Voluntary Service Aberdeen.

These images, from the 80s and 90s, show some of the incredible events the service has been involved in.

1992: Voluntary Service Aberdeen chairwoman Doris Meston and Deputy Firemaster Sandy Lobban enjoy a joke at the handing over of keys to the new Christopher Car at North Anderson Drive fire station.
1992: It wasn't hard for Cynthia Beaton (left) and Dorothy Miles to volunteer smiles in the Aberdeen sunshine yesterday. Both work for Voluntary Service Aberdeen and both will receive their certificates in social services tomorrow at the Dundee campus of the Northern College.
1985: A new Transit ambulance is presented to Voluntary Service Aberdeen yesterday. Half the cost was met by the Winlaw Trust, and in the picture trustees James Collie and Miss Mary Wishart hand over the keys to voluntary driver Doug Singer while residents and staff of Deemount House look on. VSA said the ambulance would be used to provide outings and trips for housebound people.

1990: Voluntary Service Aberdeen yesterday accepted a new minibus from the Winlaw Trust. The presentation was made at Forestgait Old People's Home, Aberdeen, by trustee Mr Ian Collie (centre left). Also in the picture are fellow trustee Mr George Collie (right) and volunteer driver Mr Ken Mutch (back) with some of the home's residents.

1986: Thrift pays. That was the message that came from the 21st birthday party to celebrate the coming of age of Voluntary Service Aberdeen, whose Thrift Shops in the city will next year have netted £1,000,000. Seated front are four of the original shop volunteers who worked in VS's first premises at 183 King Street. Left to right are: Mrs Jessie Sutherland, Mrs Gladys Thomson, Mrs Jean Cooper, and Mrs Lilian Morrison, all Aberdeen. Also pictured are Mr Brian Mennie, manager of the Gallowgate shop, and Mr Gordon Hardie, chairman of Voluntary Service, Aberdeen. The birthday party took the form of a buffet supper, held last night in the city's Station Hotel.
1986: Two cheques, each worth £300 were handed over to the Voluntary Service Aberdeen, yesterday. Centre left is Mr Quentin Tweedie, chairman of Aberdeen and Deeside Round Table, presenting a cheque to Mrs Jean Drey, VS publicity officer. The cash is to boost the Foster Parent for a Day scheme. Handing over the other cheque, towards the Telephone Fund for Housebound Old Folk, is table community service convener Mr Bill Slater (centre right). Accepting is senior social worker Mr Jim Mathieson. In the background are, from left, Ann Cowie, Margaret Brooker and Margaret Whyte.

1985: As Buff Hardie of Scotland the What? points out, it's another £1000 for the Happy Old Age Appeal of the Voluntary Service Aberdeen. And helping hold up the big donation from BP are (left) Lord Provost Henry Rae and BP acting assistant general manager (administration) Mr David Jamieson. Also pictured at the presentation at the VSA's annual meeting yesterday are Mrs Jean Drey, VSA chairman Mr Colin Murray, BP's Sheila Black, appeals assistant Mr John Thwaites and Aberdeen Old People's Welfare Council secretary Mr Bill Howie.

1987: Among the first to benefit from the windfall was Mrs Isabella Wiseman (83), in the new Christopher Car bought by VSA. On the right are members of the Grampian Fire Service, who drive the van, Sandy Corbett, Richard Kelbie, Eddie Rose, Archie Spence with organiser Mrs Margaret Grant and some of their customers. Some of the helpers are pictured on the left.
