Severn hopes for change in fortune with Ross County

Goalkeeper James Severn hopes his move to Ross County can help him revive his career after several years of frustration in his search for first-team football.

Severn last week joined the Staggies on amateur terms until January, ending manager Jim McIntyre’s hunt for goalkeeping cover after Scott Fox’s ankle injury which will keep him out for two months.

The Englishman most recently played for Conference North side Worcester City on a non-contract basis after being released by League 1 outfit Scunthorpe United at the end of last season.

In his three years at the Iron, Severn made just three first-team appearances. His final season was plagued by injury troubles.

Severn hopes the move to Scotland can bring about a change in fortunes as he looks to dislodge on-loan goalkeeper Gary Woods, who is currently standing in for Fox.

Severn said: “I feel like I need to do something now. I’m looking forward to getting back on track. Three years have gone and not much has really happened.

“I’ve had to be very patient. In my first season at Scunthorpe I was only 19. We were in a relegation tussle so they said they didn’t want to chuck me into that. They ended up bringing in someone else.

“In the second year the other goalkeeper kept 24 clean sheets, so I didn’t even get a sniff.

“Last year, I did my quad in pre-season and then I broke my arm. That was last season for me in a nutshell. That’s football, unfortunately. Hopefully I’ve had my injuries now and I’m ready to go.”

Severn came through the youth ranks at Derby County, where was capped by England at under-17, under-19 and under-20 levels, playing alongside internationals such as Jack Wilshere, Andros Townsend and Steven Caulker.

Severn feels the move to County was too good to turn down and added: “Every opportunity you get, you’ve got to take it. Especially after what happened to me last season.

“At the end of the day, it’s a top division in Scotland. For me, that’s a great move.”
