Rothes appoint Mulheron after Roy quits post

New boss Rab Mulheron and recently departed Graeme Roy
New boss Rab Mulheron and recently departed Graeme Roy

Rothes last night appointed Rab Mulheron as successor to Graeme Roy, who has resigned 11 months after taking over the Mackessack Park hotseat from Frani More.

The Speysiders are in 14th place in the Highland League table thanks to an unexpected victory over Lossiemouth a fortnight ago. But after losing eight goals to Elgin City in the North Cup last Wednesday and another eight again at home to Fraserburgh on Saturday, former Buckie Thistle goalkeeping coach Roy has decided to call it a day.

Both Roy and his former assistant, Mulheron, were unavailable for comment last night but Rothes president Robbie Thomson confirmed that, although he was delighted to have made such a swift appointment, he was saddened to see Roy depart.

Thomson said: “I was very impressed by what our new manager, Rab Mulheron, his new assistant Willie Duncan, who was our coach, and our goalkeeping coach Scott Riddoch had to say in a meetiing tonight. Rab, Willie and Scott will be in charge for Wednesday’s home game against Clach and thereafter. Results have not been what we had been expecting but I am sorry to see Graeme depart. He is a well-liked, enthusiastic football man and we wish Graeme all the best and he will always be welcome at Mackessack Park.”
