Bear Grylls: Donald Trump would make a good survivor in the wild

Bear Grylls has said he thinks Donald Trump could be a good survivor in the wild, although he is unsure if the president’s hair “would cope”.

The TV adventurer previously featured President Barack Obama on his survival skills programme Running Wild in 2015, and he said he would consider doing the same with Mr Trump.

Grylls told ITV’s Good Morning Britain that he believes Mr Trump “is a survivor”.

He said: “It’s funny, we actually had the same executive producer on NBC when he was doing The Apprentice and we were doing Running Wild over there, so when he was running for president we’d just finished the Obama one, and we went ‘let’s do it.’

“But I’m not sure his hair would cope.”

Grylls added: “I actually kind of admire his resilience, and his dogged determination and tenacity. Whatever you think of his politics, he definitely has that.

“And actually as a survivor in the wild, that is an important quality.

“I never judge any book by its cover. I’ve learned from so many different adventures and shows, whether it’s The Island or whatever, it’s actually about what’s in here.”

Quoting the founder of Scouting, Robert Baden-Powell, Grylls said: “It’s not the veneer without, it’s the spirit within.”

Grylls, who is the Scout Association’s Chief Scout, appeared on the programme to praise the institution’s impact on its young members.

He said: “Scouting changes lives, I’ve been Chief Scout for eight years and it’s an incredible honour.

“We’re part of a worldwide family of 40 million young heroes who just do so much to help communities and help people in vulnerable areas, and give people access to adventure that maybe would never normally get a chance to experience the outdoors.

“I’m super proud to be a small cog in this incredible worldwide family.”
