Aberdeen residents are being offered the chance to sign up for a free online budgeting course.

Christians Against Poverty (CAP) and Catalyst Vineyard Church are working in partnership to deliver the money course.

The programme is designed to give a broad picture of finances, including sessions on building and balancing a budget, the CAP money system, maintenance and savings.

During Covid-19 lockdown and restrictions, the course was adapted so that people could participate online instead.

Having seen how successful it was, Catalyst Vineyard Church has decided to continue delivering the course virtually.

Struggle to cope with rising prices

CAP money coach Adrienne Purdie said: “Things have been really challenging for a lot of people in recent months, particularly when it comes to managing their finances.

“The Covid-19 pandemic has had an impact on us all in some way but many people in Aberdeen have seen their incomes drop or found it harder to cope with rising prices of things like energy, petrol and food.

“While we all face different financial challenges, getting our money under control, preparing a budget and having a clear picture of what’s coming in and going out is essential.

“The CAP money course can give you the tools you need to control your cash.

“We found during lockdown that people who joined the course online really benefited, in the same way as they would have done in person.

“In fact, some people were able to access the course who may not otherwise have been able to do so.”

Every penny counts

Former CAP money course delegate, Kate, said: “I found the CAP money course a great tool to help with budgeting. It has helped me have control over my finances rather than them having control over me.”

The weekly course runs for three weeks and each group session lasts for 90 minutes.

CAP debt centre manager Ben Clift said: “We are all counting every penny at the moment, making sure they stretch to the end of the week and month.

“The CAP money course is an excellent way to get a grip on what is coming in and out, and how to plan for the future.

“My wife and I have done the course together and have massively benefited from the freedom that comes from having the skills and tools to manage your money.

“I would fully recommend it to anyone, whatever their financial situation.”

Ms Purdie added: “You don’t need to be a computer whizz to get this running.

“All you need to be able to do is to use email and click on the link from an introductory email we’ll send once you’ve registered for the course.”

To register for the sessions starting on November 2, at 7.30pm, contact Benjamin Clift on 07955 723676 or email capmoney@catalyst.vin.
