Barra’s famous beach runway has topped a list of the most beautiful runways in the world.
The list of six runways was put together by Artemis Aerospace from over 41,000 airports around the world.
It also includes airports in more exotic locations, including Greece, Brazil and Venice, but Barra came out on top with its picturesque setting and usual layout.
Barra Airport is famous for its beach runway, located on a tidal beach on the second southernmost island in the Outer Hebrides.
It is protected inside the Traigh Mhòr bay to the north of the island with a single domestic flight from Glasgow.
Opened in 1936, the airport is at the mercy of incoming and outgoing tides, and for Twin Otter pilots, landing can be both daunting and rewarding.
Barra beach runway unique experience
Pilots require special training to land on the sandy runway, with Highlands and Islands Airports running special courses for civilian pilots.
Experiencing the unique thrill of landing on a beach runway often makes it onto people’s “bucket lists” of must-dos.
What adds to the experience is the knowledge that just a few hours after landing, the sandy runway will likely be underwater.
Barra Airport beat out tough competition from Skiathos Airport in Greece, where eager plane spotters can be close to the action as low-flying planes pass just feet above them.
Another runway infamous for its thrill factor and included on the list is Tenzig-Hilary Airport in Nepal, surrounded by high mountains and sharp drop-offs.
Frequently included in the top 10 lists of most dangerous airports, the runway is at a sharp incline and is the main gateway for trekkers visiting Mount Everest Base Camp.
Recently Barra Airport has been in line for a makeover, including a new terminal, however, aviation enthusiasts will be glad to know the famous beach runway is staying.
