Shining stars among north-east tradespeople were honoured at a dinner and awards ceremony at the Mercure Aberdeen Ardoe House hotel last night.

More than 400 people were there to see fellow professionals recognised for their achievements.

A record number of applications were received for the fourth annual Trades Awards, which was open to businesses of all sizes and disciplines from within the construction industry

A total of 13 gongs included one for outstanding contribution, which went to Willie Donald of Stonehaven-based civil engineering and construction services firm WM Donald. His company took the top health and safety accolade.

Shaun Davies of Stewart Milne Homes and David Oliver of Barratt Homes were the apprentice and site manager of the year respectively, while Claire Robison of DM Hall came away with the young surveyor’s title.

Scott Kelly of KLY Electrics was crowned tradesman of the year.

The other winning firms were MAC Architects, Papillon Design and Landscaping, Classic Abode, Sangster and Lees Joinery Contractors, AD Heating, KLY Electrical and CFF Contractors.

Celebrity builder and TV personality Tommy Walsh shared his journey from tools to TV with the audience, and to help with the award presentations.

The Trades Awards are organised and run by Aberdeen company Xcite Media, whose managing director, Darren Ross, said: “While the north-east is clearly going through a very difficult time, it is important to remember that the construction industry still has much to shout about.

“If the Trades Awards can help in some small way to remind people of the incredible range of career opportunities and business achievements within the industry, then we are delighted.”
