SPECIAL FEATURE
Optical coherence tomography (OCT) is a non-invasive imaging test that uses light waves to take cross-section pictures of your retina in all its glorious detail.
The exciting, cutting-edge technology allows your optician to map and measure the light-sensitive retina tissue lining the back of the eye.
OCT is similar to an ultrasound in how it works – and by monitoring changes that may be happening along the retinal tissue, it is now possible to detect signs of macular degeneration, glaucoma, diabetic retinopathy, and other health issues earlier and more accurately than ever – sometimes years before symptoms begin to show.
Macular degeneration is a breakdown of a small area of the retina, causing a gradual loss of central vision.
One of the biggest worries with it is that many people are not aware that they have an issue until they have a noticeable vision problem.
With OCT, the optician can clearly see the internal structure of the eye, meaning macular degeneration can be treated far earlier than conventional imaging techniques would have allowed.
Your OCT scans are kept on file so that your optician can compare each scan and immediately spot any unusual changes in your retina. It’s a quick and easy way to give yourself peace of mind regarding your eye health.
OCT scanning isn’t currently available on the NHS but many opticians offer this service for a small fee. It is available at selected Duncan and Todd branches for just £25.
