Classic cars and embracing technology might not seem to go together, but Alan Sharpe has managed to combine both the old and new after founding a rather special club.
The 67-year-old from Inverurie knew he wasn’t alone in his love of classic cars, and in particular the mighty Stag.
He set about getting in touch with other Stag owners from as far afield as Shetland – and Grampian Stags was born.
With more than 30 members the group tries to meet up each month for a pint and a natter – before planning road trips across Scotland.
From using social media to spread the word and designing a website, Alan is determined to move with the times.
He’s also hoping to attract some fresh blood, and current members already have a diverse range of backgrounds.
“If you consider the fact that a car can be considered a classic if it’s from 1991, there are a lot more younger enthusiasts joining the game,” said Alan.
“It’s brilliant to see, Grampian Stags started two years ago and just grew in size.
“It was a pretty simple idea, bringing people together who own a Stag.
“We keep in touch via e-mail and I think technology has honestly been the reason in part behind our success.
“These days you can’t afford to not keep up with the times, we’re always using social media and updating our events.”
But what is it about the Stag which has made Alan dedicate an entire club to it?
On his own admission he has always loved Stags and has owned three over the past 20 years.
His current Stag, a 1977 Triumph Stag Mark 2, has been put to good use and Alan estimates he does roughly 4,000 miles a year.
“I just think the Stag is a beautiful car, it’s not that I don’t like other classics but I have a real soft spot for the Stag,” he said.
“My current Stag is always out on the road, I just love getting out and about in her.
“I bought her from Banchory but she originally came from Cornwall.
“She’s been highly modified and I enjoy tinkering about, I’ve just learned as I’ve gone along.”
Alan’s hobby has kept him pretty busy and he also runs the Garioch Vintage and Veteran rally which takes place every August.
“It’s a great community and it’s great to bring people together, I can’t imagine my life without classics now.”
