Escape to leafy luxury

Rita Brown sampled a weekend break at a hidden gem in the heart of Edinburgh

Before marriage and babies and settling down, I once spent a summer working and living in New York City.

Whenever I was tired – Ugh! To think I ever knew what the word “tired” meant back then – I would escape to Bryant Park. The leafy enclosure provided a blissful hideaway from all the city hustle and bustle.

Looking out of my hotel window all these years later, I was transported straight back to the camouflaged oasis.

But this time, I was nowhere near Lady Liberty and her various Empire-state-of-mind friends.

No, this time, I dragged my three-kids-later, legitimately tired self away for a much needed girls’ weekend in Edinburgh’s luxury Bonham Hotel.

The west end spot is a 10-minute walk or £7 cab ride from the centre of town. But its tree-lined streets and neighbouring walk-ups make this enclave a completely hidden gem in Scotland’s crown city.

Every detail oozes luxury – from the White Company toiletries to its attentive, endearing concierge who anticipates guests’ every need.

The only sour note of the getaway was the room not being ready for our 2.30pm arrival.

My fellow tired-and-in-need-of-wine gal pal and I found solace in the hotel’s bar. An adorable one-room hideaway packed with overstuffed chairs and brimming with classic martinis.

Despite the delay in getting into the room, it was completely worth the wait.

The room’s pinnacle was the stunning four-poster king-sized bed – its canopy skimming the extra-high ceiling. To the left was a bathroom I could have lived in. The shower, situated over an old-fashioned bath, blasted you from all angles. The backdrop was a classic marbled floor.

Jutting out to the right of the room was a separate sitting room complete with settee, TV and working desk.

Before dinner, we headed back to the bar where we met a friend who owned a business near the hotel. He gave the place an additional nod of approval when he told me it was more than just a great escape. In his opinion, the boutique hotel, which features artwork by Tilo Strengel throughout, was one of the best places to meet for business lunches.

Standout dishes from our relaxing dinner included the a la cart menu’s steak, which was cooked to perfection, and the lamb shank, which features Israeli lemon couscous and apricot jus.

The restaurant’s chocolate mousse was like a deconstructed Crunchie bar and the homemade vanilla ice cream was simplicity at its best.

After tottering back upstairs, we were greeted with the most delicate tray of homemade desserts, including lavender macaroons, a berry medley and hand-rolled truffles.

The next morning, we tried out the traditional Scottish breakfast and eggs benedict – both fitting starts to the day.

An extended checkout time allowed for a bonus hour of bliss.

As we rolled our cases down the steps, we bade farewell to our city hideaway – the perfect luxury escape well within reach.
