Outrage as food stolen from north-east food bank

Donated food destined for a north-east food bank has been stolen.

Northfield Community Centre made a successful appeal for donations for Community Food Initiative North East (CFINE).

But the site was raided by thieves the following day in what outraged community leaders called a “soul destroying” act.

The centre’s chairwoman Jacqui Innes said: “The P1 to P7 club came to the centre on Thursday evening after we put out an appeal to gather food for CFINE.

“The next morning, on the Friday, the crate of food which was filled was stolen.”

Mrs Innes added that she hoped those who stole the food would be brought to justice.

“I hope they can find the people who stole the food. The centre might have to think again about donating food.”

CFINE boss Dave Simmers expressed his dismay at the incident.

“It is very disappointing that this should happen in the Northfield community. The people are just trying to help out,” he said.

“These people could have been stealing from the mouths of bairns, it is not on.”

Councillor Gordon Graham, who represents the Mastrick North/Northfield area, said: “I was astonished when I found out. I understand people need to use food banks, but stealing from them is really disappointing.”

Police Scotland have urged anyone with information about the theft to contact them on 101 or alternatively Crimestoppers on 0800 555111.
