One graduate will continue living and working in her beloved Orkney having graduated with a first-class degree in management.

Raema Campbell, 23, has been working in the housing department of Orkney Council for two years while completing her studies, and will return home after celebrating her graduation.

To reward herself for the hard work, she’s about to head for a break from Scotland by travelling down under.

Ms Campbell, of Kirkwall, said: “I’m going travelling to Australia and New Zealand first for six to seven weeks. It will be good.

“After that I’ll be back in Orkney working for the council.”

It was not all smooth sailing for the islander as she embarked on her studies.

Ms Campbell said: “My university experience was a little different to most people as I experienced circumstances within my family that resulted in me wanting to be home.

“Therefore, I did my first two years living in Aberdeen attending university full time studying and enjoying the student experience.

“I then undertook my placement year back home in Orkney and was able to complete my honours distance learning from Orkney while working full time.”

It was due to this transition that she had to swap from studying A BA Management with Human Resources to a BA (Hons) Management.

She added: “I found this a really good experience as it enabled the flexibility to work while continuing with university and my studies and also to continue to do my degree.”

She said it had been “challenging” to balance working full-time with her degree but added that Saturday workshops in Aberdeen allowed her to keep enjoying student life.

She was joined yesterday at her graduation by a large family procession, including her mum, stepdad, dad, stepmum and her brother.
