Ambitious plans to improve Aberdeen traffic problems

A busy Aberdeen route could be transformed in an ambitious revamp to improve traffic.

The proposals would mean scrapping the Esplanade roundabout at the Beach Ballroom and traffic lights installed at the junction with Links Road.

The road would also be partially dualled on a section of route just north of  the current roundabout.

The plans would mean no right-hand turns from the Esplanade onto Links Road for traffic.

And there would be no right-hand turns from Links Road onto the Esplanade, with the exception of buses.

The plans have been under consideration for a number of years and Neil Cooney, convener of communities, housing and infrastructure said the council is still looking to push them forward.

He said: “Aberdeen City Council is proposing to extend the dualling of the Esplanade past the Beach Ballroom and install a left turn only and a bus gate on Links Road, to make better use of the area, rather than the existing roundabout.

“This has been planned for about two years after an up-scaling of earlier designs for just the roundabout four years ago.

“However, the full design has been delayed as other larger projects around the city such as the Third Don Crossing, the AWPR, and the Berryden Corridor have naturally taken priority.

“We aim to further progress the project as soon as timescales allow.”
