Motorists are facing “major disruption” during three weeks of overnight closures at one of Aberdeen’s most notorious bottlenecks.
The Bridge of Dee will be shut every night between 7.30pm and 6am from October 24 for up to three weeks of remedial work on the structure.
BEAR Scotland announced the traffic measures would be installed to allow them to carry out more than £100,000 of repair works on the A-listed bridge.
Originally built in the 16th century to replace a ferry boat over the Dee, the bridge has been the primary link between Aberdeen and the south for centuries, and is still used by thousands of drivers travelling north and south on the A90.
The decision was made to start the extensive repairs after numerous cracks, holes and other signs of degradation were discovered in the historic masonry of the crossing.
A spokesman for BEAR Scotland said: “For the safety of the teams and motorists, the Bridge of Dee is planned to be closed each night from 7.30pm to 6am during the works, with a diversion in place between Great Southern Road and Riverside Drive.
“The works have been scheduled to take place overnight to limit any impact to motorists and teams will look to complete the inspections and repairs as quickly and safely as possible.
“The masonry repairs will address areas of general wear on the Bridge of Dee. This type of maintenance work was last completed on the structure in 2000, and the latest investment will ensure the integrity of the bridge for years to come.”
Catherine Cowie, secretary of Kincorth and Leggart community council said: “It’s good they have planned the works to take place overnight, but that bridge is really busy, day and night.
“I can see major disruption coming, but, of course, if the bridge needs to be repaired, it needs to be repaired.”
Meanwhile, commuters travelling to and from Aberdeen from north of the city are still battling with numerous ongoing roadworks.
Temporary traffic measures will be in place on The Parkway in Bridge of Don until Sunday for gas connection works.
And motorists travelling on the A90 Aberdeen to Ellon road will face congestion at rush hour due to a number of planned roadworks along the route for various projects this month.
