The driver of a bakery delivery van who died after his vehicle came off the road in an Aberdeenshire town on Thursday could have suffered a heart attack.
Douglas McBain died at the scene of the crash in Inverurie at around 5am on Thursday, January 19.
The JG Ross van smashed over the top of a bollard in the middle of Burghmuir Drive, between Morrisons supermarket and the Garioch sports centre.
The vehicle collided with a tree and a garden fence.
It is now believed that Mr McBain had a heart attack just before the crash.
Cameron Ross from JG Ross said in an online tribute: “It was a total shock when I received the call from another driver of the accident.
“Fortunately I was able to be with Douglas fairly quickly, just as the police arrived, but unfortunately despite the valiant efforts of the police, fire and ambulance service Douglas could not be revived.
“Although still to be confirmed through post-mortem, it is probable that Douglas had a heart attack whilst driving which caused the accident.
“Douglas McBain had been with the company since October 2005 initially delivering goods from the bakery at Portsoy but since 2010 from Inverurie delivering to the Fraserburgh and Peterhead areas.
“Douglas was a kind gentle man who was well liked by colleagues and customers alike.
“Customers have retold how he was always happy to lend a hand or do them a favour and that he brought a smile to their face when he came in with their order.
“In his spare time he was an enthusiastic bowler winning many trophies and was President of the Highland Bowling Association, President of Elgin & District Indoor Bowling Club and President of Cullen Bowling Club this year.
“He will be sorely missed.”
