A north-east church is appealing for food bank donations after revealing demand is as high as ever.
St James Church, near Cruden Bay, regularly holds a food collection during weekly services. Food bank use in the region has been linked to low wages and on-going economic uncertainty.
Now, the congregation has warned that there is as much demand for edibles and toiletries as ever.
A special food collection event will be held tomorrow at Morrisons supermarket in Peterhead from 10am-4pm.
Last night, parishioner Sam Coull said: “The charitable distribution to those in need will be undertaken by our Episcopal Church’s long-time Cyrenian friends.
“All the signs indicate that austerity still bites deep and any real recovery in the oil industry feeding back into the local economy is some way off.”
Mr Coull added the congregation hopes the food drive is an opportunity for the “sympathetic public” to reach out and help those less fortunate than themselves.
He added: “An extra tin, jar or whatever doesn’t add that much to the bill at the check-out. With it goes that warm feeling of satisfaction knowing that, when you sit down to lunch, you have helped someone else less fortunate.”
