Former Wimpy restaurant in Peterhead goes up for sale

The Wimpy in Peterhead.
The Wimpy in Peterhead.

A Wimpy restaurant which closed four years ago could finally be moved on to new owners when it goes to auction next month.

The Peterhead franchise pulled out of the town in 2014, bringing the brand’s number of outlets in Scotland down to just four.

In the Blue Toon, fans desiring one of its famous burgers can now only visit Fraserburgh or make a 108-mile round-trip to Inverness for the nearest branch.

Previously, they had been able to enjoy the likes of a Wimpy Burger in the port’s high street for about 40 years.

And Auctioneers Future Property Auctions could now finally end any hope of it reopening on June 13, when the property is expected to fetch £135,000.

The firm has branded it a “100% prime location” for a business to move into.

The fully-fitted restaurant has enough seating to cover 50 diners at any one time and, when run as a Wimpy, offered a takeaway service.

In advertising the listing, Future Property Auctions adds the building is an “ideal investment potential with various alternative uses to generate an excellent rental”.

And it “would provide super investment return”.

At the time, local councillors blamed the arrival of other takeaways on the outskirts of the port for the chain’s demise.

Stephen Calder, who was a member of Peterhead’s community council during the closure, called for a push to only promote businesses moving to the Buchan Gateway which will not have a “significant adverse effect” on the town centre.

Since 2014, however, a KFC and a family restaurant has moved to the edge of Peterhead.

There are also proposals in place to create a new petrol filling station and coffee shop off the A90.

There is still a Wimpy restaurant in Kilmarnock, Motherwell, Dingwall and Fraserburgh.

The chain also previously operated out of Codona’s funfair in Aberdeen.
