An event detailing innovative plans for a research centre at Foresterhill health campus will be held tonight.

It has been one year since the launch of Aberdeen University’s Centre for Women’s Health Research, which will be based at the new £167 million Baird Family Hospital by 2021.

It will provide maternity, gynaecology, breast screening and breast surgery services as well as hosting a team of “world-class” researchers from Aberdeen University.

To commemorate a year since the centre’s launch , a special event will be held tonight at the Rowett Institute.

Attendees will hear more about the facility’s developments, and plans to “enhance world-class care” within the field of medical research.

At tonight’s event, lead researchers from the centre will also be on hand to answer questions about their areas of expertise, including fertility, pregnancy, childbirth, and menstrual issues – in particular endometriosis and menopause.

The official launch last year

Professor Steve Heys, head of Aberdeen University’s medical school, said: “We have pioneered the transformation of women’s health care for many decades, in particular through our internationally-recognised research in obstetrics and gynaecology, which began with Professor Sir Dugald Baird in the 1940s and continues today.

“Launched by Her Excellency Dr Sheikha Aisha Bint Faleh Al Thani in March 2018, the Aberdeen Centre for Women’s Health Research has a mission to achieve excellence in research across the spectrum of women’s health, and to enhance the university’s position as a global leader in this area.

“This event is an excellent opportunity to find out what has already been achieved in the last 12 months and what exciting developments are on the horizon.”

The event will be held at the Rowett Institute on the Foresterhill campus from 6.30pm–8pm tonight.
