Police investigate series of fires in Aberdeen’s west end

A car has been seriously damaged by fire during a spate of blazes in Aberdeen which police believe may have been started deliberately.

Officers are currently investigating four incidents which took place in the west end of the city in the early hours of Sunday morning.

The fires, which were reported between 5.13am and 6.39am, occurred on Mile-End Avenue, Camperdown Road, Raeden Court and Raeden Place.

Police say each of the fires started in bins.

One of the blazes, in the Mile-End Avenue area, was so severe that it spread to a parked car, causing significant damage.

Nearby residents said they woke up in the middle of the night with the orange glow of the burning 4×4 vehicle lighting-up their bedrooms, and called the police when they looked-out to see the “well-developed” incident.

Yesterday morning, police stood guard near the vehicle as they carried out inquiries.

The Ford’s windows were shattered, its rear wheels melted and much of the body burned down to the bare metal.

Detective Sergeant Sam Harris said police consider it was possible the blazes were linked and urged anyone who knows what happened to phone the authorities.

He said: “The timings of these fires and the area in which they happened indicate that there may be a connection between them, but nothing is being ruled out at this stage.

“I am particularly interested to hear from anyone who was in the west end area of Aberdeen early this morning.

“Did you see or hear anything which might have struck you as suspicious and did you see anything or anyone which looked out of place at that time?”

He added: “We are carrying out door-to-door inquiries in the immediate area of the fires and are reviewing CCTV footage.

“I would appeal to anyone who may have any private CCTV footage in these areas to get in touch with us if they have any footage which might help in this investigation.

“Likewise, I am appealing to anyone who may have been driving in these areas to call us if they had a dash-cam fitted and working in their vehicle.

“Anyone with any information which may help in this inquiry should call police in Aberdeen on the 101 number.”

Anyone who wishes to pass on information anonymously can do so by calling Crimestoppers on 0800 555 111.
