There are fears that planned mini-parks in Aberdeen city centre could be left to become overgrown.

Proposals have been put forward for the creation of so-called ‘parklets’ in Huntly Street and Holburn Street.

The proposals for the small green spaces have been put forward by Aberdeen Inspired, and would be funded with Scottish Government money.

But city councillor Bill Cormie is concerned after hearing the business improvement body plans to enlist local firms to take on their upkeep.

Mr Cormie, whose Midstocket and Rosemount ward includes the site at Huntly Street, said: “Like everyone else, I am very supportive of getting more green space in the city.

“But it’s important to ask who will be maintaining these given how stretched the council and ground staff already are.

“We already have great difficulty – as was proved last summer when the grass was waist-high in some places.

“I have spoken to officials at Aberdeen Inspired who said they were trying to find local businesses to take ownership – but, in the meantime, who will look after them?”

An Aberdeen Inspired spokeswoman said: “Aberdeen Inspired is delighted to have secured funding for this project and has carried out extensive consultation with local businesses in the vicinity of the proposed parklet locations, with the initiative being very well received.

“We are confident that this venture will continue to be supported by business and public alike, and with that have built in a contingency plan that addresses, amongst other things, maintenance.”
